How Nutcracker Casting Decisions are Made

Nutcracker casting decisions are made on the basis of a great deal of thoughtful deliberation, discussion and consideration of each of the dancers auditioning. The basis of the casting is the recommendations of a panel of judges, who observe the entire audition process. During the audition, dancers perform in groups of 3 – 6, and judges make notes on individual dancers as they perform the assigned choreography. When the audition is completed, judges make casting recommendations based on their notes and a thorough discussion of dancers’ performances. The Director makes the final artistic decision on the basis of these recommendations.
The 2 major goals of the process are to cast as many dancers as possible in the show, and to produce the best possible show with the dancers we have each year. Dancers are cast into roles on the basis of artistic and practical considerations. Artistically, the judges evaluate a dancer’s technique, style, and acting ability in order to determine the most appropriate role for each dancer. Practically, we consider the dancer’s size and height in terms of placement in a group of dancers and in terms of costume fit. Although adjustments can be made in costumes, we are still constrained by basic costume sizes. Little snow costumes, for example, are child size costumes, and will not fit larger size dancers.
There are other factors that may also impact the casting process. Dancers who have danced over the summer always perform at a higher level at auditions, which gives them an advantage over those students who did not dance during the summer.
In our view, every role in the Nutcracker is a good role. We hope each dancer will put their best effort into rehearsals and performances, and will enjoy this year’s production with us.
